SMIDS is one of the recognised institute on sea shell craft training in Kanyakumari district by the Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women Ltd. (TNCDW). Kanyakumari has a long sea shore and many coastal & rural people are engaged in the sales of sea shell crafts.

By understanding the need and importance to upgrade the skills and to increase the innovation & creativity of the people involved, the Town Panchayats have sponsored the skill up gradation training of  562 SHG members who are involved in sea shell crafts.
